Maldives Holidays
How to get to the Maldives?
Typically almost all visitors get to the Maldives by air. Because Male is too small to have an airport, you will be landing via a neighbouring island called Hulhule', which looks more like an aircraft carrier from the air.
It is interesting to note that this is the only runway in the world that begins and ends in water.
Custom Clearance at Maldives Immigration
Once you have gone through Customs and Immigration clearance and collected your luggage, you could book a hotel resort through the Tourism Ministry’s Booking Counter.
If you have already made your Maldives holidays travel plan through your travel agent, which is advisable, you could meet your holiday representative there.
Transfer via Seaplane or Speedboat
When researching prices and resorts for your Maldives holidays, it’s worth remembering that some Maldives holidays packages will be quoted with transfers built into the price while others will not.
Transfers can be quite pricey. Transfers are usually via seaplane or speedboat.
Given the stunning scenery it’s always advisable to arrive by seaplane where possible – the views of the islands from the air are nothing short of spectacular.
The landing runway is simply unique and you will gain an unforgettable image in your mind.
This is when you own your first Maldivian memorabilia. Get ready - the wheels suddenly bounce onto the asphalt, just as your flight seems about to splash into the greenish blue crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean!
If your transfer is not via seaplane it is possible to ride in a seaplane during your stay – and get some stunning photos of the islands and atolls from high above.
Maldives Holidays - Transfer Options from Hulhule
Some resorts are located quite close to the airport in Male – transfer times can be under 20 minutes while other resorts further away may take an hour or even two to reach depending on the type of transfer.
Keep in mind that after travelling a long distance on a flight, the last thing that you’ll want to do is spend a further couple of hours on a speedboat.
With Maldives holidays, the main transportation mode from Hulhule to your next stop is mainly by ‘dhoni’ or Maldivian ferries. These motor boats which takes about 10 to 15 minutes to reach Male could accommodate about 30-40 people.
If your destination is the capital, you could hire one of these ferries for about US$7.00 - $10.00. Fares are bargainable with the ‘Falhuveriyaa’, the Captain of the dhoni. The most economical option is to form a group with other tourist and share the dhoni fare.
Speedboats which can accommodate about 5-7 people is a faster forms of transportation, and take only 5 minutes to reach Male. The fare is about US$15.00. Further destinations such as the atolls in Ari Atoll could be reached by helicopter transport which is expensive but certainly worth the price.
If this is your choice you would be in for a breath-taking trip which would never fail to impress you with the most beautiful scenery of endless waters.
These waters have an incredibly large spectrum of colours, ranging from light green of the shallowest lagoons to the dark blue of the deepest seas. Frequently, you will see green vegetation of coconut palms enclosed by white sandy bands.
The Climate In The Maldives
The Maldives enjoys a tropical climate which means its temperature tends to stay between 25 & 32 degrees C.
The ideal time to go tends to be between December and April (this is supported by the higher prices during these times) because this is when the weather is most calm and has the least rainfall.
